Duke Ellington Sites
 

Garnet Elementary School. His mother lied and said he was 6 years old so he could attend elementary school. He preferred drawing to music, and spent a lot of time watching baseball at Griffith Stadium.

 John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church. Duke attended here as a child. He would go to two services on Sunday's, usually.

The Gayety Theater. He used to sneak in here when he was bout 12 years old to watch the musicians, dancers, and comedians. This was an early influence to push him into being a performer.

The Armstrong Manual Training Institute. Duke began classes here in 1913, studying commercial art. It was during this time is friend Edward McEntree gave him the nickname "Duke" because of his fashion sense.

The Pratt Institute. Duke won a full scholarship to attend the institute. He declined the scholarship and dropped out of high school in February 1917 to pursue a career as a musician.

True Reformer's Hall. Duke formed a band after leaving high school, called "The Duke Serenaders". They played their first gig here in 1918, with Duke playing piano, a guitar, drums, and a saxophone.

The Lafayette Theatre. Duke had to share the stage with a vaudeville act who wanted to use Duke's band to back up his act. At the end of the gig, the other act wanted Duke to tour with him. Duke said no, and stayed in New York City.

The Cotton Club. A local radio station would feature bands live on Radio. This gave Duke the exposure to people all across the U.S. During the late 1920's.

St. John the Divine. Duke composed and performed religious music in large churches such as this one, and Westminster Abbey below.

Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He had lung cancer, and was admitted. A piano was brought to his room. He died here on May 24, 1974.
