Run DMC Sites
 

Hollis, Queens, New York. Run (Joseph Simmons) and DMC (Darry McDaniels) grew up in this area. As kids, they would hang out at a place called "the building", which was the only high rise in the area. The park at 205th street was also a place they would play basketball and hangout.

St. Pascal-Baylon Elementary Schoool. DMC attended in the late 1970's, and had to wear blue and yellow uniforms.

Public Shool #192. DMC attended this school, hanging out in Jamaica Park, located behind the school. The kids in the neighborhood would bring their turntables and records to the park to MC and DJ. DMC originally used the name "GrandMaster Get High". Late 1970's.

Brother Rice High School. Darryl attends. He would hang with his friends here, drinking malt liquor while listening to music. This was the only Catholic High School in Harlem.

Spofford Juvenile Detention Center. In 1980, Jam Master Jay (Jason Mizell) gets blamed for a house robbery, even though witnesses describe the thief as a light skinned person, not matching Jay's description. He spends four days here, preparing to fight while incarcerated. He actually enjoyed his time, and went home after his release.

Adelphi University. In the summer of 1983, Run DMC go to the school's radio station WBAU to do an interview with Bill Stepney. WBAU was the first station to play both "It's Like That" and "Sucker MC's".

The Roxy. Run DMC plays a gig here in the summer of 1983.

Danceteria. They played a gig here in the summer of 1983. A lot of white people were in the audience, but the response to "Sucker MC's" and "It's Like That" was positive.

In the spring of 1984, Rick Rubin brings the Beastie Boys here to meet Russell Simmons.

The Fun House. They do a show here on August 5th, 1983. Members of the Zulu Nation, a former street gang were in the audience. Run and DMC were worried about the Zulu Nation, and argued about who should appear on stage first. Run shoved DMC on stage, ending the argument. They would also frequent the Fun House to listen to other rappers and DJ's, as well as the Furious Five.

New York University. Rick Rubin attends, and has a dorm room here. Russell Simmons and DMC meet Rick here. They liked Rick, thought he was cool, and had a lot of different records.

The Philadelphia Spectrum. June 21, 1986, Run introduces their new song "My Adidas". He gets the crowd to take off their shoes and hold them in the air.

Madison Square Garden. July 18, 1986. They make $100,000 for a two hour show. Afterwards, they meet Angelo Anastasio, an executive from Adidas. He wanted to talk to them about an endorsement deal with Adidas.

Long Beach Arena. August 17, 1986. Run DMC has show with other groups, including Whodini and LL Cool J. From backstage, DMC could see gang members moving close to the stage. the gangsters started jumping on stage while LL Cool J was performing, but were removed by security. During a break in the show, people started fighting. Whodini asks the crowd to stop, but goes unnoticed. People were breaking the chairs to use as weapons. Guns were fired. One person is thrown off the balcony. Vanessa Williams is brought to Run DMC's dressing room, crying, with her bodyguard. After three hours, the police arrive and break up the melee.

The former Palladium Night Club. It is now the Palladium Dorm at NYU. Another link to Rick Rubin, as the Beastie Boys write "Fight for your Right" on a napkin in five minutes.

The former Ritz Night club, a rock club. In 1988, Run DMC reshoots part of the film "Tougher than Leather" here. Now known as Webster Hall.

House of Blues, Los Angeles. They do a show here on march 5th, 1999, playing their old school songs. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith sneak on stage, and they play "Walk This Way".

The Hit Factory. In May of 1999, they collaborate with Sugar Ray, and cut a track called "Here we go Again". John Lennon spent his last hours alive here, and Bruce Springsteen recorded "Born in the USA" here.

The Puck Building. Jam Master Jay attends a Hip Hop Hall of Fame indiction ceremony here. Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Crazy Legs, Grandmaster Caz, Kangol Kid, and Grandmaster Flash were in attendance. The old DefJam record label office was located near this building.

PNC Bank Arts Center. August 14, 2002. Run DMC plays a show here, with the temperature near 100 degrees. Kid Rock joins them on stage, as does Aerosmith. They were surprised that the rock and roll crowd still liked their version of "Walk this Way".

The Studio on Merrick Boulevard where Jam Master Jay was killed. Two gunmen were buzzed into the building, and they shot Jay and another man (who lived). Despite a $50,000 reward for information leading to the killer's arrest, no leads were found. Popular theory is that he was involved in selling drugs, and was involved in a deal gone bad.

J. Foster Phillips funeral home. November 4, 2002, the service for Jam Master Jay was held here. Jay was laid to rest wearing his black leather "Rock Box" outfit, which consisted of a fat gold chain, shell-toed adidas, black leather suit, and hat. Some of the mourners included Kurtis Blow, Doug E. Fresh, Bill Stepney, Roddy Hui, Hurricane, Runny Ray, Big D Jordan, Ad Rock, MCA, Chuck D, Big Tigga, Whodini, Foxy Brown, and Dr. Dre. Some people were getting upset because DMC started talking about doing an album in tribute to Jay.
