Cream Sites


Cambridge University. Ginger is playing for Blues Incorporated in June of 1962. Clapton and Bruce show up to sit in with them. They try to confuse Baker by playing difficult songs, but are impressed by his skills.

 The Royal Scottish Academy of Music. Bruce is awarded a scholarship to study music composition and the cello in 1960. He didn't stay long, and quit.

Ricky Tick Club in the Star and Garter. John Mayall makes his public debut in this pub.

Crawdaddy Club, 1963. Clapton meets Tom McGuinness at a Rolling Stones show here. McGuinness's girlfriend arranged the meeting because his band, the Roosters, needed a guitar player. They become friends and start playing in pubs together. The Yardirds also play in this club.

Studio 51, also known as Ken Coyler's Jazz Club. Clapton plays his first gig in this club. He lived with the band he was in at the time, in Kew.

The Marquee Club. Clapton plays with the Yardbirds on Friday nights in 1964. August 16, 1966. Their debut here. They have a stuffed gorilla on the stage. On September 27, The Herd opens for them here, with their guitarist Peter Frampton. May 23, 1967. The club was packed. The line outside snaked along Oxford street, all the way up to the 100 Club.

The Scotch of St. James. Ahmet Ertegun shows up on March 11, 1966 to listen to Cream. Clapton busts out a memorable lead solo. Ertegun decides to sign them.

The Twisted Wheel. They play here on July 29, 1966, their debut gig in Manchester. They filled in for the band Joe Tex and his American Show Band, who canceled. They drive to the gig with their roadie, Ben Palmer. They drive in their new black car, an Austin Princess. Some of their set list included "Cat's Squirrel", Lawdy Mama", "Steppin' Out", "Meet Me in the Bottom", "Train Time", "I'm so Glad", "Toad", and "The First Time I Met the Blues".

The Fishmonger's Arms. They play here August 9, 1966.

The Thames Hotel. They play here on September 4, 1966.

Located at Ray Mead Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire, England SL6 8NR

 

Agincourt Ballroom. They play here December 18, 1966. They get paid 45 pounds for a one hour show. They are asked to play another set for free. Baker says no, packs up, and leaves. Clapton and Bruce stayed. After the gig, they agreed to fire Baker.

The Chalk Farm Roundhouse. They play the Double Giant Freak Out Ball with Pink Floyd, Alan Brown Set, The Fugs, The Move, The Who, Mothers of Invention, Ram Jam Band, Brain Police, and the Radiophonic Workshop. The building was dilapidated, and most people snuck in the the sides. They found that the blues paired up well with the psychedelic motif.

The Saville Theatre. On January 29, 1967, they go here to see Jimi Hendrix play. They were impressed by the music. The riff for "Sunshine of your Love" was written by Bruce that night. Hendrix started using the song in his set list. On February 5, 1967 they make their debut here. They are supported by Sands, and Edwin Starr. Queen's Hall. The headline the "All Night Rave" with a promise to have a real gorilla on stage. No gorilla.

The Star Club. They play here at the end of February in 1967. They also lip synch for a show called "Beat Club".

The Tavern Club. They play here on March 11, 1967, and are told by their manager they will be heading to the U.S. in two weeks. Ahmet Ertegun was instrumental in forcing them to go to the states.

Sheep's Meadow. On Easter Sunday, 1967, Clapton and Bruce go to the big hippie gathering, "The Human Be In" to participate in the festivities.

The Pheasantry. Clapton moves in with future wife of Jimmy Page, Charlotte Martin. He started getting the basis for "The Tales of Brave Ulysses" here.

Manny's Music. Clapton buys a Vox wah-wah pedal here (they just came out), because he heard Hendrix use it on "The Burning of the Midnight Lamp".

Pembroke College. They play the "May Ball" here. Clapton and Bruce end up carrying a bucketful of vomit around, and Baker rides a bicycle through the hallways.

The Fillmore West. The light show used made it hard to determine who was in the band and who was in the crowd. They were surprised at how quiet the crowd was, and thought they may not like the music. They realized that the crowd was into the music, and actually were listening. A "high brow" type of crowd.

Leicester University. They play a show on February 8, 1968 before going back to the U.S. The band starts wondering if this was their last show in England.

Winterland. They play Winterland and the Fillmore West. They played two shows per day over a two week period.

The Capitol Theater. They played here August 8, 1968. Bruce wanted to buy their own P.A. system because he didn't like using different gear at each gig. Baker said they couldn't afford to buy one. Bruce got mad and left for the airport, only to be talked out of leaving by a couple roadies. They called their manager, Bob Stigwood after the gig and told him Cream were finished. They played last gig after this one.

Woolsey Hall. April 10, 1968. They play their last U.S. gig here. They cancelled their next 10 shows and went back to England.

Olympic Studios. In December 1970. Clapton plays with Keith Richards for his(Richards) 27th birthday party. He plays an early version of Brown Sugar.

Abbey Road Studios. On September 6, 1968, Clapton and George Harrison go to studio #2 to finish "While my Guitar Gently Weeps". John, Paul, and Ringo really didn't care for the song much. Clapton didn't want to play on it because no one had ever played on a Beatles album before. George insisted he play, so he did.

Oakland Coliseum. October 4, 1968. They can now ask for $60,000 per night to play. This show ends up being recorded live by Felix Dappalardi and Bill Halverson.

Royal Albert Hall. November 26, 1968. They play their last two shows here. Opening acts were Yes and Taste. Yes were upset because they didn't have time to sound check and had to play with the lights on while people walked on to see Cream. This was also the site of their reunion show on November 30, 1995, and May 2,3,5,6 2005.
